Time to go for a walk? Dr Nick explains why..
Autumn is a perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors. The cool, crisp air and colourful leaves make it such a lovely season for a walk. And the best part? Walking is one of the easiest ways to keep your body and mind in great shape.
Here’s why I think walking in autumn is a great choice:
- Keeps Your Joints Happy: Walking helps keep your joints flexible and strong, especially if you have a bit of arthritis or stiffness. It’s a gentle way to stay active without putting too much pressure on your body.
- Supports Heart Health: A regular walk can boost circulation, help lower blood pressure, and keep your heart healthy. It’s a simple way to look after yourself.
- Lifts Your Mood: There’s something about being outside, getting some fresh air, and soaking up daylight that really helps lift your spirits. It’s a natural way to reduce stress and feel more relaxed.
Here are some tips to make the most of your autumn walks:
- Dress for the Weather: Layers are your friend. Wear comfy shoes with good support and bring a hat or scarf if it’s chilly to keep the heat in!
- Choose a Scenic Spot: Find a local park, nature reserve, or even a quiet street with lots of trees. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the season.
- Stay Visible: If you’re walking in the early morning or late afternoon, wear something bright or reflective.
- Stretch Before and After: A little warm-up before and a few stretches afterwards can help prevent stiffness.
