Hip Bursitis

Bursitis is a painful condition affecting small, fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles near joints. When these bursae become inflamed, it leads to bursitis.


Hip bursitis can result from various factors. Traumatic bursitis may occur after a fall onto the hip’s side. Most cases are overuse injuries linked to biomechanical issues. Overpronation, where the knee falls inward, increases the hip angle, making one more susceptible. Weakness in the hip abductors, especially the gluteus medius, has a similar effect. Tight structures around the hip, like the iliotibial band, hip flexors, and hamstrings, can contribute. Additionally, a bone spur, a small excess growth of bone, can irritate the bursa.

Signs & Symptoms

– Pain on the outside of the hip, worsening during activities like running, climbing stairs, or getting out of a car.
– Gradual increase in pain, with tenderness when pressing on the outside of the hip.
– Possible radiating pain down the outside of the thigh.
