Health Span vs. Lifespan: Why We Need to Focus on Health Span for a Better Quality of Life

Search

Do you ever think about your health span?  As we live longer, it’s not just about adding years to our lives but adding life to our years. By making conscious, healthy choices, we can ensure that our later years are not just longer but also healthier and more fulfilling.

As we all enjoy the prospect of living longer, we often overlook what our later years might look like or just accept that with age comes poor health and a declining quality of life. Increasingly, data is showing us that this doesn’t need to be the case and that we can, with some lifestyle changes, live a healthful and enjoyable life right into our 80s.

Understanding Health Span and Lifespan

Lifespan refers to the total number of years we live, while health span is the number of years we live in good health, free from chronic illnesses and significant disabilities. Currently, the average life expectancy in the UK is around 81.77 years. However, many people spend the last decade of their lives dealing with health issues that could be avoided with the right lifestyle choices.

Why Health Span Matters

From my experience and numerous studies, including insights from the Blue Zones—regions known for their exceptionally healthy elderly populations—we know that certain lifestyle choices can extend both lifespan and health span. People in these regions often live to be 100 or more, but more importantly, they enjoy good health well into their later years. This means fewer doctor visits, less medication, and more time enjoying life.

Tips to Enhance Your Health Span

  1. Nutrition: A balanced diet is crucial. Aim to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Think of the Mediterranean diet or the diet of Blue Zone populations, which are heavy on plants and low on processed foods.
  2. Exercise: Regular physical activity is a must. It doesn’t have to be intense—just find something you enjoy, whether it’s walking, swimming, or yoga. The goal is to stay active and keep your muscles and joints healthy.
  3. Social Connections: Maintain strong social connections. Whether it’s family, friends, or community groups, having a support system can significantly impact your mental and physical health.
  4. Mental Health: Engage in activities that promote mental well-being. This can include hobbies, meditation, or even regular social outings. Mental health is just as important as physical health.
  5. Regular Check-Ups: Don’t skip your regular health screenings. Early detection of potential issues can make a huge difference in managing and even preventing chronic conditions.

Focusing on health span means that as you age, you’re more likely to stay independent, active, and engaged in life. Imagine being able to travel, play with your grandchildren, or simply enjoy your hobbies without being held back by health issues. That’s the power of prioritising your health span.
