Over a third of parents report that their child has suffered from back or neck pain. By following my tips, you can help ensure your child’s backpack use is safe and their spinal health is maintained for a successful school year! It’s amazing the weight that can come from books, folders, lunchboxes, sports kit and more! So here are some of my tips to keep your child’s spine healthy and well as the return to school begins.
Choosing the Right Backpack Picking the right backpack can make a big difference in preventing back pain.
Lightweight and Proper Size: Choose a lightweight backpack that fits your child’s size. Avoid oversized bags in particular.
Padded Straps and Back: For extra comfort and support, look for backpacks with padded shoulder straps and a padded back.
Multiple Compartments: Backpacks with multiple compartments help distribute the weight evenly.
Proper Backpack Use How your child uses their backpack is just as important as the type of backpack they have.
Wear Both Straps: Encourage your child to use both shoulder straps to balance the load evenly. Wearing a backpack incorrectly can put pressure on the neck and spine, leading to painful symptoms.
Adjust Straps: Adjust the straps so the backpack sits close to the body and rests in the middle of the back.
Weight Limit: Try to keep the backpack’s weight under 10-15% of your child’s body weight.
Exercises for a Strong Back A few simple exercises can help strengthen your child’s back and prevent pain. You can also do them together as a family!
Stretching: Daily stretching exercises like touching toes and side stretches are great.
Core Strengthening: Activities like planks and child-friendly yoga can really help strengthen core muscles and support the spine.
Finally, don’t forget that chiropractic care is great at any age, and regular check-ups can help keep your child’s spine in great shape.
